How to play Mise à Sec

Mise à Sec is a casino-style drinking card game for 2 to 8 players around a single phone: one dealer, five rounds, and the same question every turn. Can you guess the next card? For adults only.

Players
2 to 8, dealer included
What you need
A single phone, passed from hand to hand
Deck
52 cards, shuffled for every game
Rounds
Five, in the order you choose

Setting up

  1. Add 2 to 8 players and pick an emoji for each. Quick mode starts a 4-player game without typing any names.

  2. Choose the dealer: if you don't, it's the first player on the list.

  3. Set the game options if you like (rounds, variants, limit per player, alcohol-free mode), then start the game: a 52-card deck is shuffled.

A turn

  • The dealer doesn't guess. In each round, every other player plays once, starting to the dealer's left; the app tells you who to hand the phone to.
  • The player answers the round's question, then the app draws the card, without replacement: a card that is out doesn't come back until the deck runs out.
  • Right answer: the dealer drinks. Wrong answer: the player drinks.
  • The stake is one sip per turn. With progressive sips, it's the round number: 1 sip in round 1, 2 in round 2, and so on.
  • Every player keeps the cards drawn for them: they are their reference cards for the next rounds. Ace is the lowest card, King the highest.

The five rounds

Here is the default order, from the easiest to the toughest.

  1. Red or Black

Will the next card be red or black?

Hearts and diamonds are red, clubs and spades are black.

  2. Higher or Lower

Higher or lower than your last card?

The card is compared with the last one drawn for you. A card of the same value is a miss.

  3. Inside or Outside

Between your last two cards, or outside them?

Landing exactly on the value of one of them is a miss.

  4. Which Suit

    Hearts, diamonds, clubs or spades?

You need the exact suit of the next card.

  5. Which Value

Guess the exact value, from Ace to King.

The suit doesn't matter: a 7 of hearts or of spades is a 7. The hardest of the five.

Missing a reference card, because the round comes first for instance? The app draws it for you first, without you having to guess.

Double or nothing

After a right answer, the player may try their luck once more: red or black, on a new card. Win, and the dealer drinks double the stake. Lose, and the dealer drinks nothing while the player drinks the stake. Double or nothing is on by default; it can be turned off in the game options.

Variants and options

  • Rotating dealer: the dealer role passes to the next player every round, so everyone gets a turn.
  • Carte blanche: after a right answer, the player picks who drinks, dealer included. A short video unlocks it for one game.
  • Progressive sips: the stake is the round number.
  • Pick your rounds: remove a round or change their order; at least one stays.
  • Dealer's help: the odds of each choice, worked out from the cards still in the deck, and the list of cards already out.
  • Limit per player: 5, 10, 15 or 20 sips for the whole evening. A player who reaches it takes a water break and drinks no more.

End of the game

  • The game ends once every round has been played. The summary ranks the players by sips drunk, or points, and can be shared.
  • From the second game on, the evening totals show too. They reset 12 hours after the last game, or with “New evening”.
  • “Play again” starts a new game with the same players and options: the next player becomes the dealer.
  • Game cut short by a call or a closed app: the home screen offers “Resume game”, at the round you were at.

Playing without alcohol

Alcohol-free mode replaces sips with points, with no limit. At the end of the game, the player with the most points gets a dare, drawn from ten. For example:

  • Imitate an animal chosen by the group for 30 seconds
  • Dance for 20 seconds without music
  • Commentate the next turn like a sports announcer

Frequently asked questions

How many players can play Mise à Sec?

2 to 8 players, dealer included, with a single phone passed from hand to hand.

Who drinks after a right guess?

The dealer. If you guess wrong, you drink. With the Carte blanche variant, the player who guessed right picks who drinks.

Is the Ace high?

No: in Mise à Sec, the Ace is always the lowest card and the King the highest.

What happens on a tie?

In “Higher or Lower”, a card of the same value as yours is a miss. In “Inside or Outside”, landing exactly on the value of one of your two cards is a miss too.

Does the dealer play?

The dealer doesn't guess: they drink when the others get it right. With the rotating dealer, the role changes every round; otherwise it passes to the next player in the rematch.
